How to play NYT Strands

Basic game rules

The game has rules similar to the classic Word Search game but challenges players with the following points.

The Strands game offers you a 6 x 8 grid of random letters. Your task in the game is to find a list of common words for the topic and word of the day. A new puzzle is added daily.

On the side of the grid, you'll see a very brief phrase labeled "TODAY’S THEME" for the quiz. Look for words related to that topic.

If you figure out a word, click on the first letter and drag your mouse to each subsequent letter until the complete letter is formed.

Then you have to click on the last letter twice to complete it. Letters can be formed in any direction, up or down, left or right. However, it is important that each word have four or more letters.

What happens when you find a word:

If you find an exact word, it'll light up in blue.

If you find a word that is too short or invalid, it will also let you know.

If you find a special topic word called "spangram," it'll light up yellow. This word will make it easier for you to find the final answer.

In-game hints

In the game, you can also find words that have meaning but are not related to the topic. They are used to provide you with NYT Strands hint. When you find three such words and want to get help, Click on the Hint button, and the game will give you the letters of one of the topic words.
